Ultracapacitors for hi-power apps lower system design cost
    Industrial Control Designline
MANHASSET, NY — A wide range of high-power applications are being addressed by startup Ioxus, Inc. with a family of large cell prismatic electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLC) that the company claims lowers the cost for overall system designs.

The new family is the direct result of funding by The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which awarded Ioxus, among others, $200,000 in December 2009 to expand its product line, accelerate sales growth and access new markets. Ioxus received $1.5 million.

The 1,000-, 3,000- and 5,000-Farad ultracapacitors are smaller in size with increased energy and power density compared to products of other industry players, according to Ioxus.

Ioxus EDLCs can be used as sole energy storage devices or can be combined with other types of energy storage devices, such as batteries or fuel cells, to meet the user power demand requirements.

Ultracapacitors expand the system's charge and discharge capabilities into shorter response times, extend the life of other, lower-power elements and open up new options for energy storage applications.

"Ioxus is the only company developing and manufacturing ultracapacitor technologies entirely in the United States,"said Michael Tentonowski, VP Marketing/Business Development. "Our ultracapacitors are good for 10 year life and are being looked at by several car manufaturers for use in their hybrid models."

The company is working towards an AS9100 and ISO-9001 certification to adhere to the most rigorous quality standards.

Ioxus was established in 2006 by its parent company, Custom Electronics, Inc., which has supplied high reliability capacitors and integrated electronic assemblies for both commercial and military use since 1964. Ioxus is headquartered in Oneanta, NY.

Ioxus' 1,000-, 3,000- and 5,000-F ultracapacitors working at 2.7 volts are priced at $62 ; $90; and $175 in low volume.

Ioxus is also offering designer kits starting at $149.
